Day Three of Encephalitis and New Directions

Sunday, January 29, 2017

Two days after the pain showed up in my eye, we still had no answers.

My memory of the time is patchy and foggy. It’s no wonder. Despite what I understood about my situation, the truth was I was in the middle of a major brain trauma. There are some things about those days which I don’t remember (that’s the patchy part), and there are some things I remember but in a foggy way.

Since I was the pastor at my church, I preached that morning, despite the pain. I wasn’t trying to be heroic or anything… it was more that I didn’t know if what I was dealing with was serious or something small. You don’t just stop living life because you have a sore eye.

That evening, our church held a dinner for Syrian refugees in the area along with anyone who spoke Arabic and wished to connect up—as well as anyone else, of course. The night was an opportunity for our church to meet some new arrivals to Canada, and it was a blast!

We had about fifty people out, but by that point, the swelling in my eye was bad, and the pain was intense. However, the evening was so special, I barely noticed the pain at the time.

What I do remember is after everyone left, my head and my eye just ached. Even though I didn’t know what was going on, I knew things were getting worse.

To be continued…
