The next day, I really had no choice but to carry on as though nothing was out of the ordinary.
When you have a sprained ankle, you rest it.
When you have a severe cold, you stay away from people, and you get some extra sleep.
When you have a pain in your eye that, as far as you know, is not contagious, nor is it preventing you from seeingโit just hurtsโwellโฆ you just keep going.
And thatโs what I did that day. I kept going. I pressed on.
I was the pastor at my church, and I likely took some time that day to go over my sermon for Sunday morning. As I wrote this paragraph, I looked back at my notes. If youโre familiar with the Bible, I was preaching through the book of 1 Samuel and was on chapter seven. The focus ended up being on how we sometimes misplace our affectionsโeven on good thingsโbut in ways that pull us away from whatโs truly important.
Itโs amazing to me, in a way, looking back and realizing that as I preached this message of keeping our affection on Jesus Christ, I was about to lose a bunch of things that I had placed my affections on.
But then again, it was too early in the process of what was going on to know any of this.
To be continuedโฆ
